What You May Experience Physically

In the initial phase of your breathwork session, especially if it's your first time, you might encounter various bodily sensations that could initially seem unfamiliar. It's important to understand that you are in a safe environment, and these sensations typically diminish with continued practice of breathwork. Additionally, if you feel any apprehension or uncertainty about what you're experiencing during your session, please feel free to ask for assistance at any point. Remember, you maintain control throughout the session, and any physical symptoms you may encounter will typically ease as the session progresses.

Some of these sensations might include:

  • tingling or tightness in different parts of your body
  • fluctuations in body temperature
  • occasionally feeling light-headed

What You May Experience Mentally

Breathwork has a powerful ability to access your subconscious mind, where memories and emotions often remain trapped in time. As breathwork pushes you to your limits, it's common for mental dialogue to surface, attempting to protect you from potential transformative experiences. This inner chatter is a natural part of your ego mind. To maximize the benefits of your session, focus on using your breath and intention to overcome disruptive thoughts. By staying connected to your breath and allowing your subconscious to flow freely, you can delve into the underlying causes of your behavioral patterns. This process enables you to reconsider, release, and reintegrate these patterns into your body with a fresh perspective.

What You May Experience Emotionally

Engaging in breathwork can evoke many emotions, spanning from anger and frustration to sadness, love, and joy. By transcending the ego and delving into the subconscious mind, these emotions can be experienced more freely. As you dismantle internal barriers, surrender, and push through emotional obstacles, your body may naturally seek release. This release might manifest as tears or a profound emotional release. Whatever emotions arise, or even if you feel nothing, trust that you are undergoing the experience that is right for you at this moment.

Atmosphere and Experience

Breathwork sessions are typically held in an intimate setting with dim or no lighting, accompanied by impactful mainstream or instrumental music that enhances your connection to the experience. This environment fosters a potent yet nurturing atmosphere, ensuring you feel safe, empowered, and supported throughout. Each session begins with the facilitator explaining the breathwork practice and potential experiences. You will engage in 28 to 30 minutes of active breathing, followed by a calming release phase, and conclude with a guided meditation, guiding you through a profound journey of inner healing.

For online sessions, you have the flexibility to create your own breathwork space at home. Using your laptop or phone (headphones are recommend, however optional), you can immerse yourself in powerful music and guidance in the privacy of your chosen environment. Your breathwork facilitator will lead you through the active breathing, release phase, and meditation, concluding with an optional period for rest, additional music, and personal reflection.

FAQs

What is breathwork, and how does it work?

Breathwork is a therapeutic practice that uses conscious breathing techniques to enhance emotional, mental, and physical well-being. It helps release emotional blockages and fosters self-awareness, relaxation, and healing.

Is breathwork suitable for beginners?

Absolutely! Healing U Within offers sessions that cater to both beginners and experienced practitioners. We adapt the practice to accommodate all levels of experience.

What should I wear to a breathwork session?

Comfort is key. Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows you to breathe deeply and move freely. Many participants opt for yoga or workout attire.

What can I expect during a breathwork session?

A typical session includes guided breathing exercises, meditation, and a chance to explore your inner self. Each session varies, but they often lead to deep relaxation, emotional release, and a sense of peace.

Is breathwork safe during pregnancy?

It's recommended that pregnant individuals consult with their healthcare provider before participating in breathwork. Some techniques may not be suitable during pregnancy.

Do I have to speak or share anything during the group sessions?

No, you don’t have to. Sharing at the end of the session is entirely optional.

I didn't feel any of emotions. Does that mean I didn’t release anything?

No. Release doesn’t only occur as emotions, you can also release physical sensations in the body. When you feel hot/cold waves, tingling sensations, shaking, etc., you are releasing from the nervous system.

What is actually happening in a breathwork session?

During a breathwork session, you engage in a conscious, connected, circular breathing pattern that increases your oxygen intake and reduces your carbon dioxide levels. This process triggers detoxification at the molecular, cellular, tissue, and muscular levels, where memories and experiences are stored. These sessions help your body and mind release negative experiences trapped within. This breathing technique can access your subconscious mind and activate your sympathetic fight-or-flight response. By moving air in this circular, connected way, you quiet the overthinking part of your conscious mind, enabling deep healing to take place.

Why do I need breathwork? Why should I breathe?

Breathwork is an incredible tool for releasing trauma and undigested emotions from your body. This practice helps clear your mental state, providing access to clarity, peace, and any other positive feelings you wish to cultivate. Trauma can range from severe events, like losing a loved one or experiencing a car accident, to seemingly less severe incidents, such as having an argument or being insulted in school. Regardless of the severity, these experiences are processed to the best of your ability at the time, yet many get trapped in your body on a cellular level, where cellular memory exists. These unprocessed emotions, even when forgotten or neglected, can significantly impact your daily life and mental health. Maintaining good mental and emotional health is just as crucial as physical health. A healthy mental and emotional state is essential for fighting off disease, boosting immunity, and keeping our bodies in optimal condition.

Are there any health restrictions for breathwork?

We believe that everyone has the innate ability to breathe and benefit from breathwork. We encourage everyone to experience breathwork at least once, but if you have any pre-existing medical conditions, it’s wise to consult your doctor before starting. We recommend speaking with your healthcare provider if you have any of the following conditions:

  • A history of cardiovascular disease, including angina or heart attack
  • High or low blood pressure, or if you use a pacemaker
  • Glaucoma or retinal detachment
  • Osteoporosis
  • Recent significant physical injuries or surgery
  • Mental health conditions, seizure disorders, or if you are on major medications
  • A personal or family history of aneurysms
  • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant

You know your body and its conditions best, so please consult your doctor if you have any doubts. Feel free to reach out to us with any questions or concerns at info@healinguwithin.com

What is the atmosphere like? Or what does a typical session look like?

In our sessions, we prioritize creating an atmosphere that feels nurturing and safe. Our goal is to provide a space where you can comfortably release control and freely experience your emotions. The environment is designed to be relaxing, with dim lighting to enhance your sense of ease; if the lights are brighter than preferred, you can use a towel or eye mask to cover your eyes. We play contemporary or instrumental music at a high volume, carefully selected to complement your healing journey and energize your experience. Our aim is for you to feel secure, supported, and well-cared for throughout the session.

What causes cramping or tightness in my hands, feet and extremities?

Increasing oxygen and lowering carbon dioxide can trigger a strong physical response, sometimes leading to cramping or tightness in your extremities if you force your exhalations too hard. In our practice, we focus on deep inhalations and relaxed exhalations. You might hear your Breathwork Facilitator advise you to soften or release your exhales gently to help prevent or reduce cramping. Sometimes, cramping can also be due to deficiencies in magnesium, calcium, or potassium. Rest assured, any cramping in your extremities will typically subside during the second part of the session.

What is tetany?

Tetany refers to cramping or muscle spasms that can occur in your extremities, often in your hands or feet, during a breathwork session. You might notice this as your hands or fingers cramping up, resembling lobster claws. However, as mentioned earlier, your body will naturally return to normal once you finish the active breathing phase.
